THE SALVATION ARMY COMMUNITY CENTER in BINGHAMTON
Sculpture Explorations
The Mark for the Community Center at Binghamton
This "Mark" is the graphic developed by the  2016 design class at Syracuse University to be used in the Binghammton Salvation Army Community Center's identiy and communications.  This is the basis of further sculpture design studies.

If you compare the "Mark" with the sculpture on the left and assume that they both represent "Community", you need to have a good story so that people can get meaning of the symbol.

The design students created a video to help explain their design intent - this video helps to tell that story of folks coming together ...

The sequence from the student's video illustrates the coming together of community members into the
various programs of the Community Center as represented by the larger triangles.

To start the conversation about the various ways that a triangular motif might translate into a sculpture the works of
several other sculptors were presented - followed by some design ideas of my own.

The tubular structure represents the Community Center, the triangles represent the programs and services within the Center and the subdivisions of the triangles represent the people in the community that are a part of the programs.
Studies of different ways of representing the people within each program:  (1) a grid on the surface of the triangle
(2) elements cut out of the triangle  (3) photographs of people on the surface of the triangles. ...
